The play introduction
Youth is a stage adaptation of Feng Xiaogang’s film of the same name, produced by Sanwu Theatre Collective.
Set against the backdrop of a military art troupe in 1970s China, the play follows a group of young performers whose idealism, discipline, and emotional bonds are tested by time, love, and historical change
Role: Political Commissar
Performed by Yehong Zhang
The Political Commissar embodies authority and ideological order within the military art troupe, shaping the collective through discipline and restraint. Rather than overt control, the character operates through presence, silence, and measured authority, revealing the tension between institutional power and human empathy. On stage, he anchors individual youth and artistic expression within a larger historical reality.
